Ubuntu 16.04 Server Edition, known as Xenial Xerus, has been released by Canonical, now available for installation. For more details on this Long Time Support version, visit the previous article on upgrading Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04. This guide will walk you through the process of installing Ubuntu 16.04 Server Edition on your machine.
Note: If you're seeking the Desktop Edition, refer to the previous article on installing Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop.
1. Download the latest version of Ubuntu Server ISO image from the provided link and save it on your computer.
Once the download is complete, use Unbootin for BIOS machines or Rufus for UEFI machines to create a bootable USB drive or CD.
2. Insert the bootable media into your drive, start your machine, and use a special function key (F2, F11, F12) to boot from the USB/CD drive.
Upon booting, you'll encounter the Ubuntu installer's first screen. Select your language and proceed to the next screen by hitting Enter.
3. Choose the first option to install Ubuntu Server and press Enter.
4. Select the installation language you prefer and continue by pressing Enter.
5. Proceed to select your physical location from the list or choose "Other" to specify your location. This choice influences the timezone system variable. Refer to the guide images for assistance.
6. Configure locales and keyboard settings as directed and proceed by hitting Enter.
7. The installer will load additional components and automatically configure your network settings if a DHCP server is available on your LAN. For a server installation, it's recommended to set a static IP address for your network interface.
To configure manually, interrupt the automatic process or go back to the hostname phase and choose "Configure network manually." Enter your network settings accordingly, including IP Address, netmask, gateway, and at least two DNS nameservers.
