Bill and I, in Alabama, devised a kidnapping plan to raise $2,000 for a land deal in Illinois. Our target was a 10-year-old red-haired boy, the only child of influential Ebenezer Dorset. We aimed to extort a ransom of $2,000 from his father. About two miles from Summit, stood a cave on a cedar-covered mountain where we hid our supplies. One night, we lured the boy with candy and a carriage ride. He fought fiercely but we subed him and took him to the cave. He wore bird feathers in his hair and brandished a stick, declaring himself "Red Chief, terror of the plains." Bill, playing "Old Hank, the trapper," got scalped by the boy. "He's all right now," said the boy, "We're playing Indian." When asked if he wanted to go home, the boy replied, "Aw, what for? I don't have any fun at home. I hate school. I like camping out. You won't take me back home." We stayed in the cave for a while. One night, Bill was hit by a small rock behind his left ear and fell into a frying pan of hot water. After cooling him with cold water, I scolded the boy, "If your behavior doesn't improve, I'll take you home. Will you behave?" The boy replied, "I was just joking. I didn't mean to hurt Old Hank. But what did he hit me for?" We decided to write a letter to Ebenezer Dorset, demanding ransom for the boy's return. The letter read:
Bill and I brought Johnny home that night, convincing him his father had bought him a gun for bear hunting. At midnight, Bill handed over $250 to Ebenezer Dorset. Johnny cried loudly, clinging to Bill's leg when his father pulled him away. "How long can you hold him?" Bill asked. "Not as strong as before," replied Dorset, "but I can promise ten minutes." "Enough," Bill said, "In ten minutes, I'll cross multiple states and head for the Canadian border."
Darkness enveloped us.
