but与except同义，但but多用在every，any，no等和由这些词构成的复合词如everything，anywhere，nobody等词以后及all，none之后 eg： The children go to school everyday but Sunday. They are all gone but me. You can get the book anywhere but here. There is no one but me. Who but George would do such a thing?

expect表示期望，是动词
I expect you to come
except表示除了，是连词
We will go there except him.

except和but的区别

Be careful ... "EXPECT" means 期待, EXCEPT means 除了之外。。。那时有人看他们认为它们是同一词，但它们有很多区别. (如果我的中文有错，please correct me ;)

Some examples:

I like to dance except when I am tired.
I like to dance but only when I'm not tired.

Everybody in my class except Mary likes to dance.
Everybody in my class but Mary likes to dance.
