1.I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke ring the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, "Do you speak English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself!'
2.The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left. I knew that my turn had come.
'Mr.Harmsworth,' I said in a weak voice.
'Don't interrupt,' he said.
Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra thousand pounds a year!
3.After I had had lunch at a village pub, I looked for my bag. I had left it on a chair beside the door and now it wasn't there! As I was looking for it, the landlord came in.
'Did you have a good meal?" he asked.
'Yes, thank you,' I answered, 'but I can't pay the bill. I haven't got my bag.'
The landlord smiled and immediately went out. In a few minutes he returned with my bag and gave it back to me.
'I'm very sorry,' he said. 'My dog had taken in into the garden. He often does this!'

Tom:Hi,Mary, how are you? What are you doing?
Mary:Hi,Tom.I am looking at the pictures of my pet dog.
Tom:Oh,it's so cute.A lovely dog.Look at its pig-tail,just like mine.What's its name?
Mary:Its name is Doggy.I like my dog to have a pig-tail.Oh,Mike is coming.He has a gog,too.
Mike:Hello,guys.How are things going?
Tom:Fine.You have a dog,haven't you?
Mike:Yeah,my dog is very naughty. It always chases the other dogs.
Mary:It must be a male dog.A male dog always runs after a female one.
Rose:You are right. On my way here,a male dog was follwing me.
Mike:You don't like dogs,do you?
Rose:No,I don't.Dogs are always dirty.
Tom:I don't like dogs, either. They either bark or bite.
Mary:But not all the dogs.My dog is very honest.
Mike:Your dog must be a female dog.Is it a boy or a girl?
Rose:It is a girl.Look,it has a pig-tail on its head.
Mike:But,how do you explain the pig-tail on Tom's head?
Rose:Tom is a boy,of course, but he is an artist. He can play piano well.
Tom:Yes.I am not a dog,but an artist.Can your dog play piano,Mary?
Mary:No,but it's really a male dog.I just take it as my little sister.
Rose:Oh my God!What's wrong with this world? All the males like to have pig-tails?Would they wear skirts in the future.
Mike:It's hard to say.If possible,I would like to wear skirt.
Rose:A skirt is much better than long pants.
Tom:It's no strange.Men in Scothland wear skirts. It's their tradition.
Mike:Let's move to Scothland.
Mary:Well,I think we have to move to the classroom.
Rose:Oh,it's time for class.
Tom:OK.Let's go.

Albert Betty Candy Daniel

Albert: Hi, guys, how are things going? Hi, Betty, you look great, I heard you went to HongKong Disneyland, right?
Betty: Hi, Albert, yes, I went to Disneyland with my parents, uncle , antie and cousin.
Albert: Wow, a big group.
Betty: Yeah, you know, the more, the merrier.
Albert: That's true.
Betty: You should go there some time too, it is a wonderful place, and HongKong goverment is still expanding it.
Albert: Yeah, I'd love to. Hi, Candy, I like your new hair cut, where did you get it?
Candy: You like it? Thanks! My neighbor boy made fun of me for this hair cut. I almost get back to the hair saloon to change it back!
Albert: Oh, Please don't, I really love it! You looks so cute with it! Hi, Daniel, what are you reading?
Daniel: The latest Harry Potter. I borrowed it from Nancy, and I promised to return it before this weekend. So I have to hurry up and finish it before that deadline.
Albert: Oh, pity! I just want to suggest we go swimming this afternoon. You know, it's so hot that I just want to stay in water to get cool.
Betty & Candy: Good idea! I'd love to.
Daniel: Oh, I think I would skip it.
Betty: Come on, Daniel, you could continue your reading after the sunset. Staring at the book for a whole day is harmful to your eyes.
Candy: Yeah, Betty has a point there, you would look mb in glasses!
Daniel: All right, I will go too. When and where shall we meet?
Albert: 2 pm, at the gate of Grand Department Store. OK?
Candy & Betty & Daniel: OK, see you then.

Reporter1:Allison. Reporter2:Celia. Student1:Benny.Student2:Kimberley.

Allison: Well here I am at the Brooklyn Academy of Dramatic Arts. We are asking different students here about their favourite forms of artistic entertainment. Pop or classical concerts? Art galleries or the theatre? The ballet or the opera? The first person I'm going to talk to is Benny Gross. Benny comes from New York and he's 20 years old and he's studying the piano. Benny, hello and welcome to our programme.

Benny: Hi, thanks.
Allison: So, first question Benny—have you ever been to an art gallery?

Benny: Yes, lots of times.

Allison: And the ballet, have you ever been to the ballet?

Benny: Yes, a few times. It's all right, I quite like it.

Allison: And what about classical concerts?

Benny: Yes, of course, many many times.

Allison: Erm—next—have you ever been to an exhibition, Benny?

Benny: Oh, yes—I love going to photographic exhibitions.

Allison: Do you? Now, next question—what about a ... folk concert?

Benny: No, never. I think folk music is awful.

Allison: Ok. And the opera? Have you ever been to the opera?

Benny: Yes. Two or three times. It's a little difficult but I quite like it.

Allison: And a pop concert?

Benny: No, never.

Allison: And finally—have you ever been to the theatre?

Benny: Yes, once or twice, but I didn't like it much.

Allison: Ok Benny. Now the next thing is—which do you like best from this list of eight forms of artistic entertainment?

Benny: Well I like going to classical concerts best because I'm a musician, and I love classical music.

Allison: Ok and what next?

Benny: Erm let's see—next, art galleries I think. And then, exhibitions.

Allison: OK—art galleries, then exhibitions. Then? The theatre?

Benny: No, I don't think so, I don't really like the theatre.

Allison: The ballet? The opera? Which do you prefer of those two?

Benny: The opera.

Allison: So of the theatre and the ballet, which do you prefer?

Benny: Erm, the ballet I think because there's the music. I can always enjoy the music if I don't always like the dancing.

Allison: Right, well, thanks very much, Benny.

Benny: You're welcome.

Celia: Next guest is Kimberley Martins. What are you studying here, Kimberley?

Kimberley: Modern dance. I want to be a professional dancer when I leave.

Celia: OK, so here we go. First question—have you ever been to an art gallery?

Kimberley: Yes, lots of times.

Celia: And have you ever been to the ballet? Stupid question I think.

Kimberley: Yes, a bit. Of course I have. I go almost every night if I can.

Celia: And what about classical concerts?

Kimberley: Yes—there are classical concerts here a lot—the other students perform here and I go to those when I can.

Celia: What about exhibitions—have you ever—?

Kimberley: Oh yes, lots of times—I like exhibitions—exhibitions about famous people—dancers, actors, you know—

Celia: Mmm. And what about a folk concert? Have you ever been to one of them?

Kimberley: No, I don't like folk music very much.

Celia: What about the opera?

Kimberley: No, never. I don't really like opera. It's a bit too heavy for me.

Celia: A pop concert?

Kimberley: Yes. I saw Madonna once. She was fantastic—she's a really great dancer.

Celia: And have you ever been to the theatre?

Kimberley: Yes, I have.

Celia: Right. Thank you Kimberley. My next question is—which do you like best of all? And I think I know the answer.

Kimberley: Yes—ballet, of course. After that, exhibitions. And after that, art galleries.

Celia: OK.

Kimberley: Erm, what's left. Can I see the list?

Celia: Yes, of course.

Kimberley: Erm, let me see—oh, it's difficult—I suppose—what next?—er—classical concerts, pop concerts, the theatre. Well, I think pop concerts next, I like going to those. Then I don't know. Classical concerts or the theatre? Classical concerts I think. So that leaves the theatre after them. OK?

Celia: Great. And many thanks for talking to us, Kimberley.

Kimberley: You're welcome.
