Part 1: In The Beginning...
"To be frank, I liked playing saxophone better than guitar, but it wasn't easy to own a sax, so I bought some books and learned guitar by myself. My initial interest is just for fun rather than good techniques." ~ Wong Ka Kui
Wong Ka Kui owned his first guitar at the age of 17. His neighbors were just moving, and gave him an old wooden accoustic guitar. Up until that point, he had an interest in music, but never had a passion to learn it. But rather than wasting such an instrument, he went out and bought some books and tought himself how to play.
Yip Sai Wing owned his first drum set when he was 16, he earned it after getting good grades. He often said that it was tough playing the drums because it was hard to take care of it; he would come home everyday after school and it would take him forever to set up his drums and get a little bit of practice in before he had to put it away before dinner. Sai Wing met Ka Kui ring a trip to the music store. Combined with similar interest in music and ideals, Ka Kui and Sai Wing quickly became good friends. They soon formed Beyond with some mutual friends, Lee Wing Chiu and William Tang.
In 1983, four years after Ka Kui picked up his first guitar and Sai Wing bought his first drum set, Beyond entered the "Best Band Contest" sponsered by Guitar Magazine and won the Best Band Award. They also made their first official recording in an album titled, "Hong Kong" (along with other bands), which they recorded two live events, "Photograph" and "Building".
Wong Ka Keung (Steve) didn't seem to like Rock music when he was young. But persuaded by his brother, Ka Kui, he began to take piano/keyboarding lessons, so they could form a band. Steve didn't like playing the piano and really didn't like his teacher. He formed his own band with his own friends learning how to play the bass. He learned a lot from playing on his own without the guidance of his brother and learned a lot from his friends too. In 1984, after the bassist left from Beyond, Ka Kui asked Steve to join in.
Wong Koon Chung (Paul) had always loved music and loved playing the guitar, he had been playing ever since he was really young. He was a friend of Sai Wing's, but Sai Wing never knew that Paul could play the guitar, but he did know that he was a graphics artist and asked him to make some posters and stuff for the band. That is how Paul got to know the band. Paul had been in many other bands before joining Beyond in 1985 as lead guitarist. When Paul joined, Beyond had already planned on having a concert and he had to learn 14 songs in less than month. Paul after many years, jokingly said, "maybe they wanted me because they wanted free artwork."
Lau Chi Yuen, rated as the underground bands 'fastest guitar player', joined Beyond as guitar/keyboarder in late 1985. He was a great compliment to Paul on the guitar and completed the band with his keyboards.
Beyond, at that time, never really felt serious about procing music in mass. They had written their own songs, published their own music (in an album called "Goodbye Ideals"), and held their first ever 'Charity' Beyond Concert in the summer of 1985 at Hong Kong's Ming Oi Center, (which was completely funded by their own money). They had no intentions of being famous of any sort, in fact they were playing music completely out of their own interest.
But soon enough, reality hit them. Financial factors inhibited them from doing any more of this "playing out of interest". They all had lives to live, and needed money to support themselves. Without financial support and competent people to manage their affairs while they focus on making music, none of what they did would mean a thing, and they wouldn't have any money to support themselves. Enter Leslie Chan. During their Charity Beyond Concert in 1985, Leslie Chan (Chan Kinn Tim) was persuaded by a friend, Lau Cheuk Fai, to go check them out. Initially, Leslie had no interest in bands, and thought the only way to make money as an entertainer in Hong Kong, was to be a "pop" star. Beyond completely astounded him, and made him change his mind very quickly. Soon after their concert, Beyond signed their first contract with Kinn's Music.
Part 2: A Time Of Maturity And Change
"In this void of utter darkness can you give me some light? Hands -- like ice -- don't know the direction." ~ Chasing Memories, Beyond, 1987
Now along with Leslie Chan, Beyond started their period of growth. Slowly, their music matured; but e to the disastrous sales of the EP "Forever Waiting", Beyond felt obliged to proce music that would help Kinn's Music make what it lost from their EP. The music in this EP, was basically raw and energetic. At that time, Hong Kong's music market was based on love songs and brain dead lyrics, Beyond did not gain many converts. As a result, the band had to go through a period of image changes and less "raw and energetic" material. The result was satisfactory, but it also meant less freedom to write the music that they wanted to write, and instead, go into the market trends. These changes can be observed through their next few albums, under Kinn's Music.
Although, as I mentioned above, the "Forever Waiting" EP was not a success at that time, it is truely a Beyond collectors item. The initial set consisted of 5 or 6 songs, and came in a set with a watch. There were only a limited number of sets made. The later re-release of the album (e to the increase popularity of Beyond, and for those who missed out the first time) consists of only 4 songs, does not come with a watch, and has a different cover. However, even though both EP's consists of basically the same songs, and are both defineately a rock-lover's EP, do not confuse the initial EP with the re-release: the initial set costs close to $100 (u.s), where as the re-release is only about $10.
In their second release under Kinn's,"Arabian Dancing Girl" You can see the change in Beyond from being a hard/punk rock band to a "commercial" band. As I explained, they probably did this to help Kinn's get back on it's feet after the disastrous first EP. In this album Beyond began to use synth in their music, and toned down with no raw or energetic feeling. However, in this release (which was also re-released under Cineoply in 1989), they still maintained their true rock roots and tried as much as possible to stick to guitars and drums, as well as sending a message through their music.
In their third release with Kinn's, "Modern Stage" saw Beyond changing styles again. They added a lot more synth in their music in this album, including electrical drum machines and such. On this album, there are no "real winners" with the exception of, "Past Footprints" (Gau Yat Dik Jook Jik). The song is great but was faded out early unlike the original version, entirely cutting out the guitar jamming at the end. This could have been e to artistic reasons, but the original guitar jamming was just awesome. The original (uncut/full) version was later released in a compilation album. (note: this is also the first album that Steve and Paul join in as vocalists.)
Beyond started to gain the interest of a few people, but were still not very popular. And in 1988, Lau Chi Yuen left the band (he later started his own band named:"Fau Sai Cui"), and in the same year Beyond (under the management of Leslie Chan) signed with Cineoply Records.
Part 3: New Label, More Change
"Where will the road lead me?
Who will venture with me?
there are no signs along the road,
If I walk into a narrow path again.
In search for my dream like in search for fire,
Who will be wild with me?
The long night is getting colder,
But I can only try to hide."
~ Who will venture with me, Beyond, 1991.
Beyond tried as hard as they could to get Kinn's back on it's feet, but they needed to worry about themselves as well. They now had become the 4 member Beyond that we all know them as; Wong Ka Kui (lead singer, rythm guitarist), Wong Koon Chung (vocals, lead guitarist), Wong Ka Keung (vocals, bassist), and Yip Sai Wing (backing vocals, drummer). Their signing with Cineoply had very profound effects. Once again, they took another step towards losing their musical freedom. Cineoply, was even more geared towards making money than Kinn's.
However, things weren't entirely bad, in their first realease with Cineopoly titled, "Secret Police", they gained their first number 1 hit, The Earth. Successively their music became more pop, but were able to express their feelings and give the public a message. Luckily for Beyond, people at that time wanted to hear messages in music, and it showed from all the awards The Earth won in 1988. Later Ka Kui said that this song was important to Beyond's place in Hong Kong's Music Instry. Although their music was not entirely "mainstream", it was defineately an option many people embraced, and it showed, as many of their songs became title songs for HKTVB shows. (being on HKTVB shows was a indication of popularity, since having your song on a show was like being on MTV)
Their second release with Cineoply, "Beyond IV" was an instant hit. With the song, Really Love You, a song written in dedication to their mothers, has become a timeless Beyond classic, and won the song of the year award in 1989 in Hong Kong's prestigious "Jade Solid Gold Awards". The song was ranked # 1 in all of the countdowns, it was no wonder that this album went double platinum. (this song can always be heard around Mother's Day)
With this album Beyond was hit with 2 things; one, they finally got the respect that they so deserved and the public began to like their music because of their new sound and the meanings in their lyrics. The public realized that Beyond was something different, they played and wrote their own music, unlike all those "idol" singers that they were so used to. Their songs often reflected on love, struggle, friendship, life, society, and reality, something the older "die-hard" Beyond fans already knew, which brings me to the second thing that hit Beyond from this album; the doubt from their older fans that Beyond would ever return from being a "commercial" band to being what they truely are, a hard rock band. . .
Nevertheless, Beyond moved on, and with this album, they saw a small path towards independence...
