祥子一直都是一个踏实而又安稳的人，他孤身一人来到了城里，唯一的愿望就是可以买一辆专属于自己的车，他城市，安分守己，来到了北平后努力赚钱，没有任何不良嗜好，很快就找到了一份拉车的工作，他一直都住在车主刘四爷的厂子里，在那里，祥子结识了刘四爷的女儿虎妞，虎妞生的彪悍，却很能干。
虎妞看上了祥子，于是变引诱他，还跟他有了夫妻之实，打那之后，祥子一心想要躲避这一对父女的困扰和*迫，于是搬到了曹家，可是谁知道虎妞居然假装有了祥子的骨肉，无奈之下，祥子只好与强悍的虎妞成亲。
后来，安稳的祥子被孙侦探敲诈，倾家荡产后买车的计划也没有了着落，于是只好在一次回到刘四爷的家里，后来，虎妞真的怀孕了。刘四爷由于看不起拉车的人，于是与自己的女儿决裂，夫妻二人被赶了出来，可是，虎妞还是攒钱给祥子买了一辆自己的车，后来，祥子没日没夜的辛勤劳作，居然病倒了，这一病却花掉了虎妞所有的积蓄。只是后来，虎妞难产去世了。
祥子与小福子两情相悦，祥子答应她将来要回来娶她，于是再一次离开这里拉车去了，等他回来，却发现小福子被卖到了窑子里，已经自杀了，祥子唯一的精神支柱坍塌了，最后沦落成了一个不折不扣的酒鬼，靠着给别人主持红白之事来勉强过日子，一个热血青年就这样走上了尽头。
