Tangyuan is a Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and is then cooked and served in boiling water.

汤圆是中国的传统甜品,用糯米粉浸入少量水揉成球状,放入水里煮,食用时带汤盛出。

 Its history can date back to the Song Dynasty.

汤圆的历史可追溯到宋朝时期。

In Chinese, the pronunciation of Tangyuan is similar to the word Tuanyuan, which has the meaning of reunion and happiness in Chinese.

汤圆的中文发音近似于“团圆”的发音,因此有“团团圆圆,幸福美满”之意。

 They are traditionally eaten ring the Lantern Festival, but also served as a dessert on Chinese wedding day, Dong, and any occasions such as family reunion.

按传统习俗,汤圆在元宵节、婚礼、冬至和家庭团聚的时候作为点心食用。

Glutinous rice ball/Tangyuan is made from glutinous rice flour. First prepare glutinous rice flour in a bowl and add hot water slowly until they mix into dough. Then you can pinch off the dough and roll them into small balls.

汤圆是由糯米粉做成的。首先在碗内准备一些糯米粉,然后慢慢地加入热水,直到二者混为一个面团。将面团搓成长条并掰成一段一段,将每段揉搓成一个小圆球。

Secondly you can fill Glutinous rice ball with either sweet or savoury fillings. Sweet fillings are often made from peanut butter, black sesame seeds or red beans. 

其次你就可以在汤圆里内加入甜的或咸的馅料啦。甜的馅料通常由花生酱(这可是英语君的最爱)、黑芝麻或红豆制成。

But some people prefer the savoury fillings made from meat, mushroom and green vegetables.Then you can try to enwrap all the fillings into glutinous rice dough.

但也有人喜欢由肉、香菇和青菜做成的咸味馅料。然后将选择的馅料包进一个个面团里。

Finally you can drop these Glutinous rice balls into boiling water and cook them for about several minutes until they float.

最后将这些汤圆倒进开水里面,煮几分钟后,等汤圆浮在锅里就熟了。

汤圆这种东西……他的英文名吗?glue pudding(胶体布丁)他呢,是宁波的著名小吃之一,也是我国的代表小吃之一,历史十分悠久。据传,汤圆起源于宋朝。当时各地兴起吃一种新奇食品,即用各种果饵做馅,外面用糯米粉搓成球,煮熟后,吃起来香甜可口,饶有风趣。因为这种糯米球煮在锅里又浮又沉,所以它最早叫“浮元子”,后来有的地区把“浮元子”改称元宵。与北方人不同,宁波人在春节早晨都有合家聚坐共进汤圆的传统习俗。还有另一种传说,1912年袁世凯篡夺*成果,做了大总统,他一心想当皇帝,又怕人民反对,一天到晚提心吊胆的。因为“元”和“袁”、“宵”与“消”是同音的,“袁消”有“袁世凯被消灭”之嫌,于是在1913年元宵节前,袁世凯就下令把元宵改为汤圆。这便是传说中汤圆名称的来历……具体见下方参考资料!!

The Lantern Festival (or Yuanxiao Festival in Chinese) is an important traditional Chinese festival, which is on the 15th of the first lunar month, marking the end of celebrations of the New Year.
Besides entertainment and beautiful lanterns, another important part of the Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Festival is eating small mpling balls made of glutinous rice flour. We call these balls yuanxiao or tangyuan. Obviously, they get the name from the festival itself. Made of sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing and round in shape, it symbolizes family unity, completeness and happiness.
The fillings inside the mplings or yuanxiao are either sweet or salty. Sweet fillings are made of sugar, walnuts, sesame, osmanthus flowers, rose petals, sweetened tangerine peel, bean paste, or jujube paste. A single ingredient or any combination can be used as the filling. The salty variety is filled with minced meat, vegetables or a mixture.
The way to make yuanxiao also varies between northern and southern China. The usual method followed in southern provinces is to shape the dough of rice flour into balls, make a hole, insert the filling, then close the hole and smooth out the mpling by rolling it between your hands. In North China, sweet or non-meat stuffing is the usual ingredient. The fillings are pressed into hardened cores, dipped lightly in water and rolled in a flat basket containing dry glutinous rice flour. A layer of the flour sticks to the filling, which is then again dipped in water and rolled a second time in the rice flour. And so it goes, like rolling a snowball, until the mpling is the desired size.
