区划沿革
1949年12月初，南路地区辖湛江市、北海市和钦县、防城、合浦、灵山、海康、遂溪、廉江、化县、吴川、梅茂、电白、茂名、信宜县。
1950年8月，南路专员公署改为高雷专员公署，遂溪、廉江、化县、茂名、信宜、电白、梅茂、吴川县。
1951年11月，市郊通平区和海滨区分别划归遂溪县和吴川县。
1952年11月，市郊的东海岛、硇洲岛、东头山岛等地划出，成立东海县，隶广东省粤西区行政公署。是年12月，改名为雷东县。
