植物群以禾本科、豆科和莎草科占优势，其中丛生禾草针茅属最为典型。此外，菊科、藜科和其他杂类草也占有重要地位。草原群落外貌呈暗绿色，植物体高度不大，生活型以地面芽植物为主。普遍具有旱生结构，如叶面积缩小，叶片内卷，气孔下陷等；植物的地下部分发达，其郁闭程度常超过地上部分。多数植物根系分布较浅，集中在0～30厘米的土层中。草原植物群具有明显的季相变化。建群植物生长、发育的盛季在六、七月份，不少植物的发育节律，随降水情况发生变异。以营养繁殖为主。草原植物群分为草甸草原、典型草原（干草原）和荒漠草原。
