It is true that 'the' is usually not used with singular proper names/nouns. There are, however, exceptions to this rule:
1. place names
For example,
sea: the Pacific Ocean
mountain groups: the Alps
rivers: the Liffey
deserts: the Sahara
cinemas and museums: the British Museum
etc.
Also,
countries: the United States of America, the Republic of China, the Netherlands
principal public buildings (in American English): the San Diego Zoo, the New York City Council
2. newspapers: The Times, The New York Post
The 'Internet' is considered 'a place' (take note from its synonyms, 'cyberspace', 'the information highway', 'the world wide web'), so it is used with the article 'the'.
Note that it cannot be used with the article 'a/an', because when we say 'Internet', we all know which one we are talking about.

1. the internet 或 the Internet
a. I saw a Mercedes crashing into a tree.
b. He was in the Philippines at that time.
c. the United Nations (联合国)
d. the People's Republic of China
e. the United States of America
