London's museums are a treasure trove waiting to be explored - from contemporary design to the animal kingdom.
British Museum
The British Museum is the oldest public museum in the world and houses a treasure trove of objects. In more than two hundred years, the museum has built up a collection of over six million objects. Highlights include the Elgin Marbles, Egyptian mummies, Rosetta Stone and the Mildenhall Treasure.
There are extensive collections of Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities, plus coins, medals, prints and drawings. The recently opened Great Court has transformed the museum by covering the inner courtyard with a glass and steel roof. It houses new galleries, a restaurant and a dynamic new piazza.
Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum contains hundreds of exciting interactive exhibits with sections on ecology and the animal world. Highlights include the Earthquake Experience, the Earth Galleries - which tell the story of our planet - and the Dinosaur Gallery. You can see creepy crawlies magnified hundreds of times, hear the roar of a dinosaur, explore the world of mammals, learn more about human biology and see the huge diplodocus skeleton.

Looking good needn't mean punishing your credit card by hitting the designer shops. London has a wide range of vintage shops where you can pick up some bargain couture.
Beyond Retro
If you want to immerse yourself in fashion bargains head to Beyond Retro, a converted warehouse in Cheshire Street. Here over 10,000 items from the 40s until the present day are housed under one large roof. This is a great place to head to for a cheap wardrobe update and many of the city's fashion students obviously agree as they visit regularly to rummage through the racks of items.
Butler & Wilson
Head to Butler & Wilson if you want to source some prime vintage clothing in pristine condition. Their shop is in the heart of Chelsea on the Fulham Road and has an extensive selection of grand dresses, art deco jewellery, bags and even Marilyn Monroe prints in stock.
One of a Kind Too
This Portobello Road vintage haven is a favourite with celebrities. Find inspiration from old Vivienne Westwood and Yves Saint Laurent clothing so rare that prices head well into the thousands! However, prices at One of a Kind Too start from about £30 so you can be sure to find something unique that is still within your price range.

Bringing the fashions of the past to back to life, Pop Boutique has a great range of retro items from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The stock changes regularly so keep popping in to see the latest offerings.
Rellik
A favourite with designers, fashion magazine editors and It-girls, Rellik in Golbourne Road has a good range of unique one-off vintage finds. Clothes hang on the walls and the racks are packed with old designer couture which is well sourced and preserved. Buy some original Westwood and create an outfit from all the other good quality second hand items that range from boots to hats.
Steinberg and Tolkien
This King's Road vintage palace is one of the city's most famous stores and is regularly listed in magazines. Steinberg and Tolkien cram a huge selection of clothes into two floors. Pick out some original Pucci, vintage American labels and combine them with some fabulous accessories by the likes of Fendi and Chanel. Prices can be reasonable and it is easy to spend a few hours rummaging through clothes collected from all the eras.
