Mt. Fule
Mt. Fule Scenic Area, situated at the southern section of the Nationally famous resort “Jianmen Shu Road”, is an integration of garden architecture, relics of the Three-kingdom and the natural landscape, purporting to be “the First Mountain of Mianyang”.
Mt. Fule was formerly known as “Dongshan”(East Mountain), and “Qishan”(Flag Mountain) for its twisting alignment resembling a flying flag. It has become a favourable tourist resort since the Tang and Song dynasties. The prosperous pine and cypress trees and the murmuring streams fully demonstrate Fule’s elegance, refinement and detachment. Well-known intellectuals and celebritiesthroughout history, such as Du Fu, Jiang Yao,Lu You, Tang Geng,Gao Di, Li Diaoyuan, Sun Tongsheng, Huang Yanpei ,etc. ,have left here a number of popular couplets, poems ans articles ,showing their appreciation of the landseape and of their historical recollection. The mountain is called “Treasure-House of Calligraphy Art of Northwest Sichuan” for its abundance of stone tablets,rock carvings , statues,and poems.
These heroes are gone and many sites and relics have been wast-ed by time .In 1987, the reconstruction of the scenic area began, giving it a new look. At present the scenes are placed and distributed naturally in accordance with the rise and fall of the land. The gardens, pretty and appealing, reflect Suzhou-Garden styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties, by using the classic Chinese gardening technique. Towers, pavilions and terraces are in perfect harmony with the thriving trees, waters and other natural scenes,giving the area a strong feeling of wilderness and rustiv charm.Important sights include:Hanhuang Garden, Yizhou Garden, Mianzhou Stele Forest, Fule Tower, Leyuan Garden, Fule Hall, Fucheng Guildhall, Taoyuan Cave, Lengyuan Cave, Xuande Lake, Mingjing Lake, Biyun Rock , etc. . Botanical gardens are: Peach Garden, Plum Ridge, Pear Garden, Chinese Rose Garden, Chinese Flowering Crab-Apple Garden, Bamboo Forest, Cassia Garden, Pine and Cypress Forest, Oriental Cherry Road, Bonsai Garden, etc. . The whole scenic area features a plentiful distribution of halls, corridors, waterfalls and lakes, making it a wonderland to experience .
Fule Hall, also called Fule Temple, was first built in the Song Dynasty and experienced desturction and reconstruction ring the Ming and Qing dynasties. The latest reconsturtion was in 1989 and now the hall covers an area of over 1,300 m. The hall, quite grand, has the Hibiscus Brook in front, the Baogai Peak at the back, and murmuring rivulets on both its sides, surrounded by trees and flowers .
The hall is noted for its meticulous architrctural style: incorporating temples and halls, towers and terraces, Wanniantai Stage, for opera play, pavilions and houses, and a long corridor; and Leixi Brook, stone arch bridge, big and small ponds, and vertical boards bearing couplets, horizontal boards inscribed with characters, stone tablets with inscriptions. Also in the hall is the huge park “Three-kingdom Shu-Han Heroes Statues”, where a good many statues of the Three –kingdom heroes are displayed, re-enacting major historical occasions of the Three-kingdom period, makimg the park an important site to learn and study the history of the Shu-Han Dynasty of the Three-kingdom period.
Fule Tower best represents the essence of Chinese architectural art in houses, towers and superstructures of the past and present. It stands at the top of Mt. Fule covering an area of 6,855 square meters, with a construction area of 4,246 square meters and a height of 53.3 m. The Tower has 5 stories and 8 facts, with arch gates and glazed-tile roofs, and richly ornamented beams and rafters.
As one of the highest building in urban Mianyang, the tower looks magnificent. On display inside the tower are series of 120 sculptures and frescos based on the Romance of Three-kingdom, which bring historical story back to life. Also displayed are the calligraphy, paintings, and character-laden vertical and horizontal boards by famous people, elegant and refined, endlessly triggering imagination and speculation. Ascending the tower in the diistance one can see the entire city of Mianyang——“City of Science”.
Just opposite Mt. Fule is the famous West Hill Scenic Area, where the “Four Sites of West Hill”, the Temple and Tomb of Jiang Wan, Yunu Spring(Jade Maiden Spring), and the Xianyun Temple are situated. Visitors can pay their respects to Jiang Wei, the Minister of War of the Shu-Han Dynasty, at his temple and tomb, before climbing up to the Ziyun Pavilion built on a high terrace, where one can appreciate the char of the Jade Maiden Spring, watch the sunset of West Hill and overlook Yingpanzui, a place where Jiang Wei stationed his troops
