Chapman University最早以Hesperian College的名字建立，并于1861年3月4日正式授课，其开课时间正好与Abraham Lincoln的首次就职典礼相重合。1920年时，被洛杉矶市中心的California Christian College合并。1934年由C.C. Chapman担任董事会*后更名为Chapman College。1954年，其校区搬到了现在的所在地——橘子郡。1958年，Chapman College曾建立居民教育中心项目，主要服务于军事人员。Chapman University是橘子郡最大最负盛名的私立学校大学，是U.S. News and World Report评选出的西部地区一流大学，排名第六。其共有八个学院：Dale E. Fowler School of Law，the Argyros School of Business and Economics，the School of Pharmacy，Dodge College of Film and Media Arts，the College of Ecational Studies，the College of Performing Arts，the Schmid College of Science，and the Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences。
