一、意思不同

1.are both意思：两者都

例句：

My grandmothers are both widows. 

我奶奶和外婆都是孤寡一人。

2.both are意思：两个都是

例句：

Both are blessed with uncommon ability to fix things. 

两人在修理东西上都有一手绝活。

二、用法不同

1.are both用法：both作同位语时，一般用在助动词、系词之后，实义动词之前。

2.both are用法：both可置于助动词或系词之前，既有助动词又有系动词时，可用在助动词后，系动词之前。但是不能紧放在代词前。

三、侧重点不同

1.are both侧重点：当一句话有明确主语的时候用are both。

2.both are侧重点：当一句话里，both本身就是主语的时候，才用both are。

一样的,不过both are 的both要在后面要个of连接,其它没什么区别
如:They are both students=Both of them are students.

当一句话有明确主语的时候用are both.比如：They are both teachers. They就是很明确的主语.
当一句话里,both 本身就是主语的时候,才用both are.
比如：（接上一个例句）Both are male.（这里both就是主语,指代那两个老师）.
再比如：We both are male. 你想问为什么有We还这样吗?因为这里we both一起做主语的.
difference是名词,意思是：不同点. They have a difference. 他们有个不同点.
different是形容词,意思是：不同的.They are different. 他们是不同的.你总不能用difference、说“他们是不同点”吧.
