There are so many security holes on Adobe procts, especially Adobe Reader. They find new ones even today. If they leave such serious incompleteness as it is, so many people around the world will be in danger, because so many, almost all windows PC also installed Adobe Reader.
Adobe has huge responsibility, so they decided that when a new serious security hole is found, all Adobe Reader will not start until the user of the PC in which the program run agree to update the some troubled files in the program(Adobe Reader), because the program is too dangerous.
It's not the "upgrading" of the main version of whole Adobe Reader (it's a kind of changing very miner version), so you can't noticed.
