在他生活的维多利亚时代，世人将他的童话与安徒生相提并论，对他的剧作追捧至极，但小说《道林·格雷的画像》却因艺术观不被接受而备受争议。当一场*爱使王尔德官司缠身，这本小说竟成为罪证之一，最终他被判“严重猥亵罪”入狱两年。出狱三年后，王尔德在巴黎一家小旅馆去世，年仅46岁。
