《邮差》所讲述故事的也是发生在未来，在经过了一系列战争和自然灾难之后，原有的社会秩序被*，人类重又回到了蛮荒无序的时代。一位四处游走的流浪者来到一个小镇表演莎士比亚的戏剧来寻求施舍，却未曾想被武装组织“洪家军”抓去当了壮丁。
“洪家军”是一个专门烧杀抢掠的武装组织，首领伯利恒更是一位生性凶残的*者。流浪汉由于不堪忍受军队里的非人待遇，在一次执行任务的途中借机逃脱。死里逃生的流浪者从一辆废旧的邮政车中找到一些遗留的衣物和信件，于是便打扮成邮差的样子来到一个小镇，以美国*职员的名义要求得到庇护和食物。此时的人们早已经不相信美国*还存在，对他拔*相对，慌乱中，流浪者从邮包中取出一封迟到的信件，让小镇上的人对他另眼相看。
邮差的意外到来到来令小镇的居民点燃了心中的希望之火，那就是*还依然存在，社会秩序还会恢复，就这样，原本只想靠一身行头混吃混喝的流浪汉成为众人心目中的英雄。面对大家的期望，邮差也意识到了自己使命的重要性，于是，流浪汉索性开始担负起邮差的职责，带领着一群热血的青年，用一封封信件在平原上传递着彼此间的信念与希望。
邮差的出现让伯利恒深感恐惧与威胁，因为他惧怕这种由信念而滋生的团结将会是一股强大的力量。于是，丧心病狂的伯利恒带领着“洪家军”到处追捕邮差、滥杀无辜，面对伯利恒这样的疯狂举措，邮差不得不率领着人们奋起反抗，并最终取得了胜利。
在《邮差》这部影片中，凯文•斯科特纳依然向大家展示了其良好的影片把控能力，但是题材的重复、太过强烈的自我风格表现，使得《邮差》非但没能超越上一部影片《水世界》，更是重蹈了票房失败的覆辙， 8000多万美圆的投资最终只收回了1700多万美圆的票房，而且还入主了当年的“金酸霉”奖，令评论界和观众大跌眼镜，而凯文•斯科特纳本人也因此而被冠以了“票房毒药”的称号。
